I chose the song The Taste of Regret by In Fear and Faith. In this song there are serveral parts that I can relate to. One part is

For goodness sake let it fade away.
Let go of the past, that tore you apart.
Embrace this chance for a brand new start.

I think that part relates to Mr. Bob Ewell because he should forget about the trial and move on instead of threatening people. He should just move on and continue life because time isn’t going to stop for him; time won’t stop for anyone.

Another part that reminded me of something from this section is

We’ll leave them with their regrets.
To feel the pain

That section in the song reminds me of the fact that even though Tom Robinson lost the case, the people that know the truth will have to live with their regrets.

I Spit At You

May 26, 2009

See this snake here? It spits venom at your face. In chapter 23, we hear that Bob Ewell spat at Atticus’s face when he was leaving the post office. Atticus just wipes it off of his face. If that was a cobra spitting venom at his face, it would have been a really bad time for him. The spit, however, was nothing more than spit. It can’t hit anywhere deep where it would hurt. Since it was spit and not venom, Atticus could just walk away without any real pain. He is already hurting inside due to losing the case and yet he tries not to show it even after getting spat at.

Cheers,
Neji

The name Ewell gave me a queasy feeling

Mr. Ewell had condemned an innocent man, Tom Robinson, to imprisonment and death. It was Mr. Ewell who was at fault for Tom Robinson’s death and suffering. Scout knew this and had put now when ever she thinks of the injustices in the world she thinks of the Mr. Ewell. Mr. Ewell is the pinnacle of human problems. He is racist, abusive, and a drunk. He has no honor and never will. Whenever Scout think of Mr. Ewell all she can think of is how terrible he is. For there is no good in him. Mr. Ewell will always always make Scout uneasy because he has only done terrible injustices to and around her. The name Ewell will forever represent the bad in the world to Scout.

Defiance (Ch. 21-25)

May 25, 2009

Tom Robinson was sentenced to imprisonment by a jury made up of prejudice and bias. Tom Robinson lost the case the minute his jury was assigned. There are few people in the world during that time whom would take the word of a black man of that of a white man. As far as most people were concerned a black man was never right and was below white men. Atticus is the outlier. Most men of that time looked down upon black men and those who see them as equals. Atticus is one of the few who see African Americans as equals and those who do not see the equality between the two will never be able to understand why men such as Atticus can. They will only ever see people like Atticus as ignorant and stupid. But, Atticus is different from those people in many ways. He sees all races as equal and he can understand why other people believe what they do. Atticus doesn’t look down on others for their beliefs and for that he will always be the outcast and the better person.

Threats? (21-25)

May 25, 2009

Tom Robinson was guilty. I mean, of course he wasn’t, but we saw it coming. In one part of this section we had to read, Mr. Ewell threatened that he would kill Atticus. Atticus brushed it off like nothing happened and continued on with his life. He then explained to his children that threatening was his way of revenge because Atticus made Mr. Bob Ewell look completely vulgar. Atticus did suggest that it was him that beat his daughter.

I’m wondering why Mr. Bob Ewell would feel like he would need to get revenge on Atticus. I know that Atticus probably ruined his pride, but he still won the case. Why can’t he just forget about it instead of moving on to bigger and better things? I’m wondering why Mr. Ewell is focusing on the past and trying to get revenge on Atticus. All Atticus did was his job at the trial, so why does he have so much hatred inside of him? It would be so much worse if Tom Robinson was declared not guilty. Mr. Ewell could be in jail instead of him. I think Mr. Ewell got the better end of the bargin, so why is there so much hate?

It getting late and the kids had missed supper. The night was running slow and nobody in the courtroom had moved much when they got back from eating. Just like before they left, the place was still. The jury comes back. When all had seemed in favor Tom Robinson, the jury finds him guilty. Atticus left to go home and he showed no sign of his defeat.

Atticus had lost the case as opposed to the victory that the kids, Scout and Jem, had suspected from their father. Tom Robinson was found guilty. It was not because he had committed the crime, it was because he was African-American which meant he was guilty from the start. When it is a White man pitted against a Black man, the White man is bound to win. What kind of crazy system is that? Is there nobody who is willing to accept the truth when faced with this situation? The guilt of a guilty woman has led such a thing to happen. Court was hardly fair back then. Atticus already knew the outcome and yet he tried. The inevitable defeat had broken him but at least he had gained the respect of others by standing up for a Black man.

“Gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury.”

Atticus says this in his closing statements of the Tom Robinson case. He is saying that a court is only as good a the poepl who make it up. THis isn’t exclusive to just courts, it stands for every instituion in the world. We have the power to decide how good something is. If somthing is corrupt we make it corrupt. If something is great and prestigous then we made it great and prestigous. An organazation is not the fault of one man but of every man in it, and the best we can do is fight those who aim to make it corupt. The place to start this war is by making your self not corrupt. You not cleanse another if you yourself aren’t true. This is what Atticus is aiming to do. He is true. he is not racist and he is trying to weed out the racism of the court system by starting with this case and hoping it will carry one throughout the country.

This here be a picture of some Coca-Cola. It is a classic drink we all know and love. Mr. Raymond is actually drinking some Coca-Cola from his sack rather than some weird form of alcohol. He only acts drunk to give a reason as to why he lives the way he does.  Coca-Cola comes in all shapes and sizes. You have the glass bottles, the plastic bottles, and the soda cans. The thing on the outside might make it look different but it is still the same thing.  Dolphus Raymond may look like a drunk but behind that mask is the man that he truly is. Everyone is a person deep down inside even if they appear to be a drunk

I think this song, To the Moon and Back Babe by Dead and Divine, relates to the relationship with Mayella and Tom. They probably secretly love each other but they know that it will not work out between them. Mayella probably got sick of it and made a move but when her father showed up everything turned really bad. Since she is probably afraid of admitting she loves a black man, she helped make and tell lie about what really happened. If you listen to the song, imagine that Tom Robinson is singing the song about Mayella. I think you will see what I do too.

who will win (17-20)

May 21, 2009

In chapter twenty, Scout, Dill, and Jem go to watch the trial. After a little bit of the trial, there are two sides of the case, both completely on the opposite sides of the line. Obviously, someone is lying. It is either the Ewells and Mr. Tate Heck, or Tom Robinson. Who do you think is telling the truth? I think it is clearly Tom who is telling the truth. His side of the story is more reasonable, and he seems more sincere on story. Mr. Heck Tate and Mr. Ewell had both really shakey stories. I could believe that Mr. Ewell would beat his children because he is an alcoholic. Alcoholics are usually more violent. Even if he wasn’t, he’s white. Since he’s white his daughter is white and he would probably beat his daughter if he saw her kissing a black person. They used this opportunity after he beat her to try and get more money from Tom Robinson since they are dirt poor. At least this is all in my opinion. Sadly, since Tom is black, he will probably be guilty.

What’s you’re opinion on this case? Are you for or against Tom Robinson? Don’t you think that a death penalty is a little too harsh?
